Esme Tolliver Diary entry

I found the flower I’ve been searching for in the archives. Professor Calderwood mentioned it haphazardly yesterday in class. But when I asked him about it after, he pretended not to know what I was talking about. He is forgetful, but never about plants. What does he know that he doesn’t want to say? Neve Cartwright was packing up her things not far away. Maybe that was his reluctance. I don’t know.

CHAPTER 15

Lilia

Walking down the hall, Pinkie in my hair and Dip fluttering behind me like an angry goblin, I made my way to our first class of the day. The burn mark on my arm from their early morning tiff still smarted, but the burnt hair smell was way worse. I just hoped the room aired out before everyone else got back from class.

“I can’t believe you did that. Honestly.” I huffed, noting that both of them were suspiciously silent. “You could have set the whole room on fire. As it is, I’ve got to go to the nurse’s office for some burn cream.”

I’m sorry, Lilia.

Dip landed on my other shoulder, pressing her face to my cheek.

As am I.

Pinkie poked his face out from under my hair. It was a little bit shorter from where I had to hack off the burned bits on that side.

“You two are going to have to get along. We’re in this together, okay?” I kissed them both, swinging open the classroom door.

A half a dozen students had gathered in the back of the classroom, peering at something in a glass case. I walked past them, giving the situation a cursory glance.

“What is it?” I asked Duncan, one of the guys I remembered from last year’s Basic Magics class. He was a shifter, but he wouldn’t tell anyone what kind.

“Dunno.” He flipped his long black hair back over his forehead, peering intently into the recesses of the cage.

“Man, there’s nothing in there. What a lame class,” another student griped and I immediately tuned him out. He looked a little familiar, but I didn’t remember him from any of my other classes so far.

The door opened and in walked Nadine, her long white hair plaited into braids. Her mini skirt masquerading as a uniform caught Duncan’s attention and I rolled my eyes as every male in the room diverted their ogling to her long hair, even longer legs, and barely there curves. She found a spot near the middle of the room and made a production of sitting down, all the guys staking their claim on the desks around her.

“Great. A testosterone fest,” I muttered, dropping my backpack on a desk in the back of the room. Dip gave a nervous flutter and landed. At her distress, Pinkie poked his head out from under my hair.

Professor Wright came bustling through the door, arms laden with books and papers. “Have a seat, now. Have a seat.” A scruffy outdoorsman, I wasn’t used to seeing him with so much reading material at once.
